2. Tate Britain is an art gallery situated on Millbank in London, and part of the Tate gallery network in Britain, with Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives. It is the oldest gallery in the network, opening in 1897.
It houses a substantial collection of the works of J. M. W. Turner.

3. National Portrait Gallery was founded in 1856 to host a collection of over 175,000 portraits of famous British men and women from the 16th Century to the present day.

6. Natural History Museum is one of three larger museums in London. The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 70 million items within five main collections: Botany, Entomology, Mineralogy, Palaeontology and Zoology.

7. The Science Museum was founded in 1857 and is a major London tourist attraction. It holds a collection of over 300,000 items, including such famous items as Stephenson’s Rocket, Puffing Billy (the oldest surviving steam locomotive), the first jet engine, some of the earliest remaining steam engines, the first prototype of the 10,000-year Clock of the Long Now, and documentation of the first typewriter.

8. The Victoria and Albert Museum was founded in 1852 and it is the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design, housing a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects. Its collection spans 5,000 years of art, from ancient times to the present day, in virtually every medium, from the cultures of Europe, North America, Asia and North Africa.

13. Horniman Museum was opened in 1901 and specialises in anthropology, natural history and musical instruments and has a collection of 350,000 objects. The ethnography and music collections have Designated status. One of its most famous exhibits is the large collection of stuffed animals. It also has an aquarium noted for its unique layout.

14. The Wallace Collection is a museum in London, with a world-famous range of fine and decorative arts from the 15th to the 19th centuries with large holdings of French 18th-century paintings, furniture, arms & armour, porcelain and Old Master paintings arranged into 25 galleries.

15. The Guildhall Gallery was originally built in 1885 to house art collections from the City of London Corporation and the present collection consists of about 4,000 works, of which around 250 are on display at any one time.

17. Dulwich Picture Gallery is an art gallery in Dulwich, South London. England’s first purpose-built public art gallery, it was designed by Regency architect Sir John Soane and opened to the public in 1817. The gallery houses one of the country’s finest collections of Old Masters, especially rich in French, Italian and Spanish Baroque paintings and in British portraits from Tudor times to the 19th century.
